EARTHQUAKE-Elm

Be Prepared Before an Earthquake

The University developed the following guidance on what to do during an earthquake based on information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

If you are indoors:

  1. Stay inside.
  2. Drop to the floor and take cover by getting under a sturdy table or piece of furniture. If there is nothing to get under, crouch in an inside corner of the building and cover your face and head with your arms.
  3. Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall.

If you are outdoors:

  1. Stay there.
  2. Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires.
  3. Once in the open, stay there until the shaking stops. The greatest danger exists directly outside buildings, at exits and alongside exterior walls.

Be prepared. Learn the steps.
