Clinicopathological Conference

Medical Alumni Association’s Clinicopathological Conference

Friday, Oct. 23, 2015
1:30 p.m.
Westminster Hall

Since 1995, the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore VA Medical Center, and Medical Alumni Association have produced an annual conference called “The Historical CPC.”

A CPC, or Clinicopathologic Conference, is a medical clinical exercise in which the history of a patient’s illness is presented to an experienced clinician for discussion in a didactic setting. This form of conference is used to teach our students and house staff how an experienced clinician would approach a difficult or challenging case.

We present an unusual, modern case on a weekly basis, but once a year we stray from our modern cases and discuss an historical figure. This event is free. Read more about this event.

Entrepreneur of the Year

James Gammie, MD, is chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery at the School of Medicine. An expert in repairing leaky mitral valves, Gammie and his research team invented a device that may enable heart valves to be fixed without opening the chest or stopping the heart.

Gammie’s Success

Gammie co-founded Harpoon Medical, Inc. in July 2013 to bring his licensed technology to the market and is UMB’s 2014 Entrepreneur of the Year.

Gammie, whose presentation “Investing in Innovation: Courage, Collaboration, and Mentoring” is one of the Founders Week events, said his success is due to a wonderful support system.

Receiving Incredible Support

“The state of Maryland and the University of Maryland, Baltimore is a wonderful environment to initiate a medical device company,” he says. Mentioning the medical school, BioMaryland Center, UM Ventures, and others, Gammie adds, “None of this would have been possible without a large network of mentors and advisors who have been incredibly supportive.”

Public Servant of the Year

Having devoted much of her career to fighting Alzheimer’s disease, which her mother suffered with for 20 years before dying in 2009, Karen Kauffman, PhD, CRNP, RN, FAAN, sees her award as the 2014 Founders Week Public Servant of the Year not only as a personal accomplishment but as a way to raise the profile of Alzheimer’s disease.

Increasing Awareness of Alzheimer’s

She points out that Alzheimer’s is the only disease in the top 10 leading causes of mortality in our country that still cannot be prevented, effectively treated, or cured.

Asked her response to the award, Kauffman, associate professor and chair of the School of Nursing’s Department of Family and Community Health, said, “My first reaction was ‘Wow! What an honor.’ My second was, ‘What a great way to increase awareness of the disease and support for the mission to create a world without Alzheimer’s.’”
