Digital assistant towers were all the rage during the holiday shopping season. Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) recently unwrapped a gift to UMB students, faculty, and staff that also has all the answers — a new informational kiosk in the lobby of the SMC Campus Center.
The colorful new addition and its accompanying touchscreens provide quick, easy answers to many transportation and transportation demand management (TDM) questions. Such as: When is the next Fells Point shuttle? How can you rent a Zipcar or a bike on campus? Do I qualify to park in the CarPool Zone at Lexington Garage?
“People are so busy. The interactive kiosk provides a wealth of information in a timely fashion,” says Tony Green, TDM and transportation manager in PTS.
The kiosk, which was designed by Adler Display Studios, was a year in the making. “We didn’t want something where someone hits a button and just goes to our website. We wanted something distinctive and appealing,” Green says. “Now you click Zipcar, you get Zipcar information on borrowing a car. You want to know where you can charge your electric car, touch the screen and it tells you.” Bold numbers offer real-time information on the UM shuttle’s four routes.
Want to know more about a program? Brochures are available in the kiosk. Nothing is perfect so there is a comments/suggestions touchscreen for users to offer input. “We’ll most definitely be modifying things as we go along,” says Green. “But this is a great start.”
