Assistant professor publishes children's book.

Charlotte Nwogwugwu, DrPH, MPH, MSN, HIV PCP, CPH-BC, assistant professor, recently published A Hero and a Friend: A Fight Against Bullying, a children's book she wrote during the pandemic.

"We have done a great job highlighting the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in work/professional and educational settings," she said. "However, there is a great need to incorporate this more in the teachings of very young children."

The book, which Nwogwugwu wrote with her sister, Dianne Pat-Ekeji, tells the story of an impactful day for Chinonye and Aarya, a Nigerian and Sudanese pair of friends who attend the same school and are bonded by similar interests and being children of foreign-born parents. The book follows the girls through a day at school during which they stand up to a bully and show up for themselves as heroes, but most importantly, as friends.

Nwogwugwu wrote the book "to highlight the impact that bullying has on mental well-being of kids and the impact 'otherism' can have on a sense of self-worth," she said.
