Main content
Associate Professor Dr. Darren Whitfield and colleagues published a new article on social support seeking behaviors among racial and ethnic minority sexual and gender minorities using social media. The study consisted of 52 semi-structured qualitative interviews with sexual and gender minority young adults using thematic analysis. The findings underscore the importance of shared identity and experience in social support seeking among this group. he findings underscore the importance of considering race and ethnicity when examining social support–seeking behaviors on social media in LGBTQ+ populations. The identified strategies provide valuable insights for the development of interventions that aim to leverage social support from social media to benefit the mental health of Black, Hispanic, and non-Hispanic White LGBTQ+ young adults.
