During a poster presentation at the CityMatCH Conference, Giselle Joseph CLC, MA and Maia Dailey,Community Achiever and  Doula presented “Community Health Workers and Parent Advocates Paving the Way to Oral Health Equity for Maryland Pregnant and Postpartum Individuals”, which highlighted their collaboration with the University of Maryland School of Dentistry to advance oral health and hygiene with expectant and parenting families. Nineteen participants of the Prenatal and Postpartum Advisory Board (PPAB) including dentists, community moms, community health workers, and prenatal providers developed strategies to address barriers and improve oral health/hygiene and overall health of low-income prenatal and postpartum women and children in Maryland given the recent expansion of Medicaid coverage of dental services for all eligible adults. Ms. Joseph and Ms. Dailey shared how the group decreased the dissemination of myths, jargon, and implicit bias related to oral health care in pregnancy. They also distributed links to videos of women sharing their views of oral health. Research questions and strategies were developed to identify strategies to address barriers to oral health care for low-income prenatal & postpartum individuals.
