Dr. Laurie Graham published in the School Social Work Journal
Main content
Assistant Professor Dr. Laurie Graham and colleagues published a new article concerning the important role that adults working in schools can play in dating and sexual violence prevention. In a sample of 1,150 high school personnel, 65.4% reported that they had the opportunity to intervene in one or more dating and sexual violence situations during the prior 12 months. Depending on the type of situation, between 37.4 and 80.9% of these school personnel engaged in positive bystander action when they had the opportunity. Generally, greater knowledge about dating and sexual violence and fewer barriers to intervening in dating and sexual violence were associated with greater bystander opportunity and action. These findings underscore the importance of providing education and support for school personnel to learn how to identify and intervene safely with dating and sexual violence among young people with whom they interact.
