Crumpton's Myanmar Research Group Receives Canadian Grant

School of Social Work adjunct professor David Crumpton's Myanmar Advocacy Research Group (MARG) has received a grant from the Canadian government's International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The IDRC grant will fund a July 30-31, 2024 "Idea Exchange" at Chiang Mai University's (Thailand) School of Public Policy for Myanmar local governance policy actors and practitioners. The Idea Exchange will consider examples of organic local governance approaches that have emerged across Myanmar since the February 2021 military coup d' état and include deliberation among participants regarding future local governance decision-making and service delivery options.

MARG was co-founded by Dr. Crumpton and an intersectoral group of Myanmar refugees living in Northern Thailand. MARG grew out of a seminar (also funded by IDRC) that he designed and directed at SPP as part of his Fulbright Scholar Grant in 2021. The seminar included a group of Myanmar fellows and considered the future of governance in their country. MARG has conducted research with the Myanmar refugee and immigrant community to identify its local governance and justice priorities for their nation after the current military regime ends.
