Faculty members Dr. Laurie Graham, Dr. Marcela Sarmiento Mellinger, and Dr. Rick Barth; MSW alumna Ms. Chantel Bennett; and PhD student Ms. April Cavaletto and others recently published an article in Families in Society titled: "The Power of Language to Transform Efforts to Address Intimate Partner Violence: Tensions in the Field and Pathways Forward." This critical commentary analyzes evolving language used to describe intimate partner violence and those impacted by such violence and considers implications of varied terminology for intervention research and practice. The article proposes a novel healing-centered framework for intimate partner violence language and interventions, grounded in the transformative work of Dr. Shawn Ginwright, the orignator of the term healing centered engagement.
