Dr. Kerri Evans recently published an article in Journal of Teaching in Social Work titled "An Assessment of MSW Social Work Curricula: Semester-Long Courses Specifically Related to Immigrants and Immigration" that discussed a comprehensive review of publicly available data on MSW school websites and the availability of coursework related to immigrants. We found a lack of semester-long immigrant-specific courses in that only 12% of the programs offered these courses. We also assessed the geographic clustering of programs that offer these courses and noted the relation of their location to communities with high immigrant populations demonstrating that social work programs are reactive to their local contexts. Yet, with one in four children in the U.S. being part of an immigrant family, we express the need for more social work programs to offer these programs, and at the same time, the need for all social work professors, across all courses, to incorporate class activities, examples, and readings that highlight the intersection of the course content with immigrant groups.
