Assistant Professor Dr. Laurie Graham and colleagues recently published an article in the Journal of Adolescent Health titled "Co-occurrence of Intimate Partner Violence and Suicide Mortality Among Adolescents and Young Adults in the United States."
The research team analyzed 2014-2018 data from the U.S. National Violent Death Reporting System for suicide decedents aged 7-24 (n=15,430 deaths). The team manually reviewed case narratives for suicides in which the narratives indicated intimate partner violence (IPV) preceded or co-occurred with the fatality (n=882). They also coded details concerning IPV type and circumstances. Analyses compared IPV-related suicides to non-IPV youth suicides and examined differences in antecedent circumstances between people with documented histories of IPV perpetration (n =651) and decedents with histories of IPV victimzation (n=81). Among IPV-related suicide decedents, most were male and had documented histories of IPV perpetration, with physical IPV most frequently reported. Compared to decedents with a history of IPV perpetration, decedents with a history of IPV victimization were more often female and younger. Narratives of decedents with IPV victimization histories had higher odds of reporting physical IPV; narratives of decedents with IPV perpetration histories had higher odds of reporting psychological IPV. This study highlights that future research should explore the relationship between IPV perpetration and suicide among young people as well as the potential impacts of such circumstances on surviving partners. Additionally, the findings underscore that IPV research and practice should seek to develop effective assessments and interventions for young people that simultaneously address IPV and suicide risk.
