Roderick Rose and colleagues have published a new article highlighting the overrepresentation of children in foster care placed in psychiatric residential treatment facilities (PRTFs) and the increasing trend of out-of-state PRTF placements. Their study found that children in foster care constituted 26-42% of PRTF placements in North Carolina, despite making up only 1% of the state's child population. Additionally, three-quarters of children placed in out-of-state PRTFs were in foster care. The authors emphasize the need for coordinated efforts in future research, policy, and practice to identify the causes of these trends and develop solutions to address the overutilization of restrictive care for children in foster care.

The authors emphasize the importance of improving access to quality community-based services and exploring alternatives to residential treatment for children in foster care with mental health challenges.
