Assistant professors collaborated with UM Ventures to copyright a clinical teaching tool.

Veronica "Ronnie" Quattrini, DNP, MS '99, BSN '85, FNP-BC, (left) assistant professor and senior director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice program; Amanda Roesch, DNP, MPH, FNP-C, (right) assistant professor; and Kate Dougherty-Soper, a teaching assistant, developed the Episodic Tool: Innovative Approach to Teach Clinical Decision Making. They then collaborated with UM Ventures to copyright the tool, faculty guides, and case studies, which are now licensed and available for purchase.

The team found that advanced practice nursing education needs a more standardized approach to teaching and evaluating students' clinical skills, similar to medical education. They created the Episodic Tool to illustrate, describe, and organize six major body systems, with a chief complaint and three age and gender combinations.

UM Ventures is a joint initiative of the MPowering the State Program, bringing the University of Maryland, Baltimore and University of Maryland, College Park together to commercialize discoveries and create economic impact.
