Murphy Buc, Daniels, Goodwin, McElroy, Smith, and Ulicny serve as co-authors for article published in 'Journal of Professional Nursing.'


A group of UMSON faculty members recently co-authored an article, “Innovating to Meet AACN Essentials in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program,” published in the September-October issue of the "Journal of Professional Nursing."

Contributors include Hannah Murphy Buc, PhD, RN, assistant professor and director of restorative justice; Amy L. Daniels, PhD ’18, MS ’12, BSN ’89, RN, CHSE-A, director of clinical simulation labs and assistant professor; Jana Goodwin, PhD, RN, CNE, chair, UMSON program at the Universities at Shady Grove, and assistant professor; Katie McElroy, PhD ’16, MS ’10, BSN ’97, RN, CNE, associate professor and associate dean for the baccalaureate program; Nicole Smith, PhD, MS ’14, RN, CNE, CHSE, CNE-cl, assistant professor and co-director of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program; and Mary Pat Ulicny, MS ’11, MHA, RN, CNE, CHSE, clinical instructor.

The article details the steps taken by UMSON to adapt its BSN program (entry and RN-to-BSN) to meet Level One competencies identified in the 2021 AACN Essentials. Using a backward design approach to ensure that all program outcomes are achieved, the authors also describe how a clinical evaluation tool was revised to evaluate students in competency-based education.
