April 15, 2025IDEA Team's Alexis Guethler Presents Educational Research at Campus and Systemwide Events
School of Social Work instructional designer Alexis Guethler was honored to have her poster accepted at the LEAPS Third Annual Symposium. The event, held on April 2, 2025, focused on “Navigating Your Professional Path: Scholarship Development Strategies for Tenure and Promotion in Professional and Graduate Education.”
The poster, titled "Reflective Self-Regulated Learning Interventions in Online Environments", featured a scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL) research study conducted during her doctoral program. This study investigated the effectiveness of reflective Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) interventions in online environments, specifically focusing on improving student perceptions of faculty/student interaction, self-regulation, and satisfaction in asynchronous online courses.
The methodology of the study was a key highlight, demonstrating how to scale an educational practice from a single classroom to multiple courses to determine its effect beyond the original context. The research employed a mixed-methods design, including a quasi-experimental pre/post survey, qualitative open-ended survey responses, and semi-structured interviews. This approach provided a comprehensive evaluation of the intervention's impact.
The poster provided a model reinforcing the day's theme of formulating and developing research studies based on educational practices. It served as a practical example of how to conceive and conduct a SOTL study, generating interest for its mixed-methods approach and joint display format.
Alexis was also selected to present this research at a concurrent session with Towson advisor William Sadera at the upcoming "Spring 2025 SoTL Showcase: Celebrating the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning across USM Institutions," which will be hosted by the Kirwin Center virtually on May 23rd.
