Andrelle Mathelier

Recipient selected for PACE Outstanding Achievement in Academic Community Engagement by a Faculty Member Award.

Andrelle Mathelier, MS, lead research project coordinator for UMB's The PATIENTS Program was selected for the Interprofessional Program for Academic Community Engagement (IPACE) Community Award in Outstanding Achievement in Academic Community Engagement by a Faculty Member Award for her work with the Community Think Tank on Research. IPACE is managed through the University of Maryland School of Nursing Department of Family and Community Health.

The Community Think Tank on Research demonstrates integration of civic and community engagement in conducting community-based participatory research by seeking to make research done by faculty UMB and other Maryland-based institutions more responsive and beneficial to community need. This is done by creating opportunities for community stakeholders to review research proposals and offer feedback about the relevance and utility of the research for local communities and/or offering feedback on how to make the research more relevant to community stakeholders.

The very nature of making University research more relevant and beneficial to community stakeholders by encouraging involvement of community members in the design of research studies demonstrates mutual and reciprocal benefits for the University’s internal and external stakeholders on issues of public concern.

Through these efforts, Mathelier provides leadership in the development of meaningful engagement for the research community at UMB and beyond and serves as an excellent example of how research faculty can engender a culture of engagement and trust with internal and external partners.
