Objective
To develop an asynchronous online training on using motivational interviewing (MI) to address vaccine hesitancy in occupational health settings and evaluate learner performance.
Methods
We developed a two-hour online course featuring interactive exercises and simulated dialogue scenarios about vaccine hesitancy and recruited U.S.-based occupational health clinicians (OHCs) via listservs. We measured MI knowledge, confidence, and skills at baseline, post-training and three months later, using an instrument adapted from existing validated tools.
Results
Of 71 OHC enrollees, 62 started the training, and 55 completed all evaluation questionnaires. Learners demonstrated significant increases in overall evaluation score (11.4% increase, 95% CI 9.9%–13.8%) and domain-specific scores. Learners rated the training highly on acceptability measures.
Conclusions
This brief asynchronous online training on using MI to address vaccine hesitancy was effective in improving OHC MI knowledge, skills, and confidence.
