Grant team launches novel advanced practice provider mentorship program.

Through a Nurse Support Program II grant that began in 2016, UMSON and the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health (UM UCH) established an academic-practice partnership to increase the readiness of nurse practitioner students to provide care across the continuum.

Through this partnership, UM UCH identified a need for assisting new advanced practice providers (APPs) transition from their role as students to their role as independent providers. After the orientation process, new APPs often lack meaningful professional relationships that can support them in their role transition.

Through the academic-practice partnership between UM UCH and UMSON, Bimbola Akintade, PhD ’11, MS ’05, MBA, MHA, BSN ’03, ACNP-BC, NEA-BC, FAANP, associate professor and associate dean for the Master of Science in Nursing program; Lynn Marie Bullock, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, assistant professor and director of the Office of Professional Education; Tonya Appleby, DNP '14, RN, CRNP, FHM, director, Hospitalist Advanced Practice Providers, UM UCH; and Keisha Indenbaum-Bates, MS '17, RN, graduate research assistant, developed a novel APP mentorship program titled CATAPULT: Coaching Advancement to All Providers Using Leadership Tools. They successfully implemented the inaugural CATAPULT Mentorship Workshop at UM UCH on Feb. 23, which commenced a 12-month-long APP mentorship program. After piloting this novel program at UM UCH, their plans are to expand this program to other University of Maryland Medical System hospitals.
