ACCOF-2 RESEARCH STUDY

Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis: Cognitive Function and Plaque Correlates - 2

The goal of this research study is to test whether carotid revascularization improves cognitive function in patients with carotid artery stenosis.

We will also measure improvements in quality of life and identify the mechanism by which stenosis results in cognitive impairment. Patients will be followed for one year.

150 patients with recently asymptomatic carotid stenosis scheduled for intervention will be enrolled. All patients will be seen at two time points: baseline and one year. Some patients may require up to two optional interval followup visits post-surgery. Of note, this study will NOT change the treatment plan agreed upon between the patient and his/her physician.

Inclusion Criteria:

  1. Must be 18 years of age or older
  2. Must have recently asymptomatic stenosis (no stroke or TIA in the past six months)
  3. Carotid stenosis ≥70 percent by duplex ultrasound, CTA, or MRA
  4. Planned to undergo carotid revascularization by the treating physician

Exclusion Criteria:

  1. Stroke or TIA within the past six months
  2. Occlusion of the index carotid artery
