Rethink the stigma of mental health.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which was designed to bring attention to mental illness and remind those who suffer from mental illness that they are supported. The stigma surrounding mental health disorders leads to many people hiding their struggles and avoiding getting the help they need. Here are ways to break these cycles:

  • Educate yourself about mental illness. Having better knowledge about common disorders will help you understand where others are coming from and how to interact with them in a compassionate manner.
  • Help break the stigma. Be mindful about the words you use when describing yourself or others, avoiding insensitive and hurtful words. Speak up when you hear people make inappropriate comments about mental illness. People living with mental illness should be respected and accepted just like everyone else.
  • Become an advocate. Share this information with your community, friends, and family members to help create more awareness surrounding mental health issues.
  • Tap into UMB’s Well-Being Resources. If you or someone you know are struggling with mental health issues, you are not alone. UMB cares for your well-being and offers many resources to help. If you have suggestions, please contact
