This fall, the University System of Maryland (USM) Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation is offering an opportunity for full-time and adjunct USM Health Sciences faculty to apply to participate in a faculty fellowship focused on inclusive teaching. The fellowship consists of participation in a nine-week virtual learning community titled "Belonging & Inclusive Teaching Fundamentals." It is being run by Lumen Learning as part of its Lumen Circles faculty development offerings with coordination by the Kirwan Center.

The fellowship invites faculty to explore evidence-based teaching practices that support student engagement and success by shaping the learning environment to recognize and build on the diverse experiences and strengths of all students. Faculty fellows practice inclusive teaching strategies and reflect on their impact. Through learning-by-doing and experience-sharing within a small cohort of fellows, faculty develop their teaching capabilities with techniques that engage students and help them to feel seen, respected, and included as capable partners in the learning process. The fellowship curriculum is designed with a particular focus on race and ethnicity as salient dimensions of social identity for faculty and students. For fall 2022, facilitators for the Belonging Circles will be drawn from Health Sciences, and faculty participants will be invited to consider and share ways in which their teaching practices can emphasize Health Equity.

Full-time and adjunct Health Sciences Faculty from within USM are invited to apply to participate at no cost to them or to their institution — all fees will be covered by the Kirwan Center.

Fall 2022 start dates are Sept. 21 and Oct. 5, and applicants can select their preferred start date on the application form

We encourage interested faculty who meet the eligibility criteria to apply ASAP, with best consideration given to applications received by Sept. 9, 2022. Note that we anticipate these Circles to fill quickly, as seats are limited.

Visit the USM Belonging Circles application page to learn more.

In addition, Lumen Learning will be holding an information session via Zoom for interested faculty on Monday, Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. ET. Register here to attend the information session and to receive a recording of the session.
