The goal of the Eutaw Street Initiative, part of the University of Maryland School of Social Work's (UMSSW) The Collaborative, is to provide supports to disengaged youth and young adults to prevent, or intervene, in the participation of high-risk activities (e.g. selling drugs, using drugs, homelessness, and/or involvement in activities that are high risk of community violence). The initiative, a partnership between UMSSW and the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department, has received funding from the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement for one year beginning in October. Kyla Liggett-Creel and Mariel Pfister will oversee the project.
The objectives of the program are to decrease crime and increase safety as well as offering resources to those in need by engaging community members in the program and providing case management, mental health supports, conflict resolution, and entrepreneurship programming. All staff (besides School of Social Work staff) involved in the Collaborative Initiative are returning citizens and credible messengers.
