In October 2022, the UMB Academy of Lifelong Learning is launching a Literacy Tutoring Pilot Program that will be delivered in the UMB Community Engagement Center (and virtually, if needed). This 12-week literacy tutoring program will serve Baltimore City students who are behind in their grade level reading skills from grades K-3 and 10-12.

We intend to recruit 60 elementary and high school students from West Baltimore to participate in this program. The goal of this literacy tutoring program is to demonstrate grade-level improvements among the elementary and high school students that participate. The Academy of Lifelong Learning intends to build this program in 2023 and beyond.

We will work with an expert and highly experienced tutoring firm, Catapult Learning, as a partner in this tutoring pilot. Catapult has a proprietary literacy tutoring curriculum, expert training and support, and is one of the largest K-12 tutoring organizations working in school districts across the United States.

The Academy of Lifelong Learning is housed within the UMB Graduate School. Our mission is to is to create and present health and human services academic content to inspire, engage, and educate learners from primary school through retirement. Delivering high-impact educational programming through tutoring to address the significant literacy crisis in Baltimore is an important and innovative part of our mission. This crisis deepened during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are determined to build a literacy tutoring program that will ultimately impact hundreds of students and their families in the city.
