Elkins Professorships for Academic Transformation

The Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation is pleased to call for nominations for the AY2023-24 Elkins Professorship for Academic Transformation. Up to $30,000 will be awarded under this professorship.

Proposals are due to Dr. Zakiya Lee (zlee@usmd.edu) by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 22, for work to begin in the subsequent academic year.

The Elkins Professorship for Academic Transformation is awarded competitively to a faculty member in the University System of Maryland to support a project that can foster or illuminate
improvements in access, quality of outcomes, and/or stewardship of people’s time, money, and other scarce resources. Work on “academic transformation” advances at least two of those three goals.

The Fellowship award of up to $30,000 is for work to be carried out over one semester of halftime work or two semesters of quarter-time work, potentially as part of an academic leave/sabbatical. The awardee’s activities would be carried out in collaboration with the staff of the William E. Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation.

The proposed work should advance and illuminate some aspect of academic transformation, directly or indirectly. More often than not, proposals will expand on inquiry or initiatives already underway. Proposals would typically outline some combination of study of existing research and evidence, new research, development, and/or action toward the solution of an educational need or challenge.

Elkins SoTL Fellowships

The Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation is pleased to announce this call for applications for the newly established Elkins Fellowships for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). Up to 10 Elkins SoTL Fellowships of $1,000 each will be awarded for AY2023-24.

Proposals are due to Dr. Zakiya Lee (zlee@usmd.edu) by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 22, for work to begin in the subsequent academic year.

Up to 10 Elkins SoTL Fellowships of $1,000 each will be awarded competitively to faculty members in the University System of Maryland (USM). These fellowships will support scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), defined as the systematic investigation of student learning, instruction, and/or teaching innovations and the dissemination of findings so as to contribute to a broader knowledge community. In line with the USM strategic plan, projects
examining some aspect of diversity, equity, and inclusion are especially encouraged.

SoTL projects at their essence aim to improve student success by providing an evidence base to help inform course design and instructional decisions undertaken by faculty and programs. There are a variety of ways to study the impacts of education interventions or to study the experiences of students, faculty, or staff in relation to teaching and learning.
