Face to Face

On recent episodes of Virtual Face to Face, University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) President Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS, sat down separately with two UMB deans for highly interesting conversations: the School of Medicine’s (UMSOM) Mark Gladwin, MD, and the School of Nursing’s (UMSON) Yolanda Ogbolu, PhD, NNP, FNAP, FAAN.

Gladwin, in his second academic year at UMOSM, spoke about his goals for the school, research, and the future of medicine — especially the integration of “big data” with artificial intelligence and immersive technologies. It is fundamentally changing the way we will treat patients. He talked about needing a cross-disciplinary teamwork approach that will meld health science partners such as pharmacists, social workers, physical therapists, nurse practitioners, nurses and navigators as the new model of patient care evolves.

Ogbolu laid out plans to meet the health care needs of Marylanders statewide with innovations in nursing education and a focus on reducing health care disparities. She also spoke about the way telemedicine exploded during the pandemic and remains largely popular. And from UMSON’s Institute of Educators to tackling student hunger, Ogbolu is always thinking about what students might need to really be successful.
