Overview
This 2-day workshop is designed to provide foundational information for nurses who are planning to seek, or have recently accepted, positions as faculty teaching nursing students in clinical settings.
Morning sessions deal with general content essential for the role. Afternoon workshop sessions offer "hands-on" opportunities to apply what is learned in the morning as well as work with live "standardized students."
The workshop is funded in part by NSPII Grant #22-111.
Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will:
- discuss a philosophy of clinical teaching as a contextual factor affecting teaching and learning;
- describe the process of clinical teaching;
- compare and contrast effective teaching strategies within the context of the clinical environment;
- discuss aspects of assessing learners’ clinical performance;
- define a personal philosophy of clinical teaching and learning;
- discuss key elements of learner and faculty preparation;
- align learner and course objectives with clinical learning opportunities;
- communicate learner performance through verbal techniques;
- apply feedback techniques to clinical learning situations;
- compare methods for formative and summative evaluation of clinical performance; and
- identify legal and ethical aspects of the clinical instructor role.

CE for Nurses
Nurse participants may receive 13.5 contact hours upon completion of this educational activity. CE will be awarded after completing the program evaluation and submitting this form. All requests must be made within 30 days following this activity. Eligible participants will receive a CE certificate via email from the UMSON within 2 to 4 weeks after submitting their request.
