The University of Maryland School of Nursing Institute for Educators invites proposals for the Dean’s Teaching Scholars Awards. Proposals are due Feb. 1, 2024. The goal of the Dean’s Teaching Scholars Awards is to facilitate the development of research and programs that support nursing education. Proposals may be either:

  • research to support evidence-based practices in teaching OR
  • courses/programs that will enhance the teaching/learning process. Examples of this second type include projects to evaluate teaching strategies or educational programs, or the development of publications or other forms of dissemination related to the scholarship of teaching.

Up to four proposals will be funded each year. Faculty having proposals approved and funded will be named as a Dean’s Teaching Scholar for the period of funding.

ELIGIBILITY

All faculty who have been an UMSON full-time faculty member for at least one year are eligible to submit a proposal.

AWARDS

The Teaching Scholars will be provided with resources and support for:

  • research projects related to teaching/learning OR
  • development of projects with potential for subsequent research funding OR
  • development of an innovative course with a major evaluation component.

Proposed budgets should not exceed $5,000. The Dean's Teaching Scholar Award funds must be spent within one year except as negotiated with the directors of the Institute for Educators.

SUPPORT and Q & A SESSIONS

Faculty submitting proposals can request consultation during proposal preparation, as well as editorial and statistical support. All proposals must be discussed with:

  • an Institute for Educators faculty member
  • the department chair who is asked to sign off on the proposal prior to submission to indicate support for the project.

Save the date for two upcoming Q & A Sessions at which faculty can learn more about this opportunity and ask questions, share proposal ideas, and brainstorm new ideas. Watch for more details in The Elm regarding location and virtual access.

  • Thursday, Oct. 26, noon - 1 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 28, noon - 1 p.m.

Funded Dean’s Teaching Scholars will submit quarterly progress reports to the Institute for Educators and attend scheduled meetings of scholars as needed. The final product of each award is expected to be a manuscript reporting on the project submitted to a peer-reviewed journal by a negotiated date for submission.

Instructions for applying for the award and further information can be found on the Institute's webpage.

An electronic copy of the proposal must be submitted by Feb. 1, 2024 to instituteforeducators@umaryland.edu.
