This seminar, “Creating a Centralized Social Media Service to Raise Awareness about Research Opportunities and to Grow our Volunteer Registry at the University of Michigan," will be presented at noon Nov. 14 by Lisa Connally, CCRP, participant recruitment program lead, Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR).

Discussion synopsis: While exploring ways to assist study teams expand recruitment efforts into traditionally underserved and underrepresented communities, the Participant Recruitment Team began to research paid, targeted social media advertising. This merging recruitment strategy seemed like a viable option, but we found that most study teams didn’t feel they had the expertise or the bandwidth to explore this method. A survey of researchers on campus found that over 70 percent said they would utilize social media as a recruitment strategy if someone else created the campaign and monitored the analytics for them. Connally will discuss how they created a centralized service to assist with social media advertising at the University of Michigan.

Connally’s path to clinical research is varied and she believes her unconventional route has played a major role in her success. From her start as an invoice clerk at a major retail giant to her role in Human Resources at the County of Monroe to becoming the deputy court administrator at the 1st Court while earning her bachelor of science degree from Eastern Michigan University as a paralegal, she can see where each of her previous roles would build on each other and provide her the invaluable experience that would lead her to her current role. Connally fell into clinical research much by happenstance 15 years ago when she began managing a private Endocrinology Research Center in Dearborn, Mich. This role would change everything and would be where she found her true calling and passion for research.
