UMSOM Dean Mark Gladwin Unveils Pioneering Collaborations and Innovations

On this episode of Virtual Face to Face, UMB President Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS, will sit down with Dean Mark Gladwin, MD, who is in his second academic year at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), to talk about his goals for the school, research, and the future of medicine.

Gladwin has overseen UMSOM as it has recently undertaken numerous groundbreaking partnerships and innovations, including:

  • being a key part of the establishment of the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing
  • the launch of a neuroscience institute called the University of Maryland-Medicine Institute for Neuroscience Discovery (UM-MIND)
  • receipt of one of the largest gifts in UMSOM’s history to establish the Kahlert Institute for Addiction Medicine
  • the second historic xenotransplant in the world of a genetically modified pig heart into a living patient with end-stage cardiovascular disease at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Gladwin will also discuss one of his greatest passions — working in an academic environment. “There is an opportunity here to meet with such a diverse range of leaders, influencers, faculty, students, staff, and alumni. I couldn’t be more excited to start every day,” Gladwin said when he assumed the position in August 2022.
