Earth Month Spring Cleaning Declutter Challenge

For the month of April, UMB’s Office of Sustainability invites you to take part in some spring cleaning! Join your fellow UMB community by taking on the Declutter Challenge. The rules are simple:

  • Day 1: find one item to gift, donate, recycle, or dispose of. Consider trashing it as the last option.
  • Day 2: find two items to part with.
  • Day 3: find three items, and so on.

Can you see how many days you can make it in April?

Share your decluttering journey (and potentially find some people to gift your usable items to) on the UMBuy Nothing Microsoft Team. There will be a dedicated channel to share your progress and find people to give items to called “Declutter Challenge” for people participating during April.

Need tips on how to dispose of something while avoiding the trash bin? Here are some resources:

  • Take advantage of Specialty Recycling Collection in April at SMC Campus Center and Lexington Building lobbies. Collected materials include: batteries (alkaline only), books, ink/toner cartridges, electronics, and plastic bags/film.
  • Join and use the UMBuy Nothing Microsoft Team to give items to other UMB members. Use it beyond the Declutter Challenge! You can also post to request items.
  • Decluttering your office space and have University-owned items like chairs, desks, or bookshelves? Visit the Surplus Property Page to re-sell via GovDeals, donate your item(s) to a local nonprofit, or dispose of it properly. Please refer to the IT Disposal System Page if you are disposing of IT equipment like computers.
  • Got other items you aren’t sure what to do with? Check out our Specialty Recycling Page or this Specialty Recycling in the Greater Baltimore Area Map.

The Spring Cleaning Declutter Challenge is part of UMB Office of Sustainability’s Earth Month Programming.
