The words

Recognition of the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States began in 1977 with the introduction of a House resolution to denote the first 10 days of May as Asian-Pacific Heritage Week. The following year, the week was designated as a national annual celebration. However, it was not until 1992 that the celebration was officially signed into law and extended into a full month.

UMB students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to participate in events and activities at the University and within the surrounding communities to honor Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The Intercultural Center warmly invites you to the following events!

Tai Chi and Bubble Tea

May 4 | 12-1 p.m. | Room 349, SMC Campus Center (621 W. Lombard St.) | Register Here

Enjoy an afternoon practicing the Chinese martial art of tai chi, which has growing evidence of treating and preventing various health problems. In collaboration with the Chinese Students and Scholars Association, we'll also be handing out free bubble tea to those who answer questions on Asian American and Pacific Islander history and culture.

Bubble tea is first-come, first-served and will be served on the first floor lobby of the SMC Campus Center.

The Table Dialogue: Unpacking the Model Minority Myth in Education

May 10 | 12-1 p.m. | Virtual - Zoom | Register Here

In this month's dialogue, we'll examine the roots of the model minority myth, how it blankets over the diverse experiences of Asian American Pacific Islander communities, and how it impacts other racially minoritized groups, specifically within the educational system.

"The Table" is a monthly dialogue series where UMB students, staff, and faculty are invited to discuss current issues and unpack questions regarding race, ethnicity, culture, and norms.

Students, faculty, and staff, let your voice be heard!
