Zipcar will add a heavily discounted young driver fee per reservation to cars booked on the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) campus starting June 19, 2023. Charging a young driver fee is an industry standard because drivers 25 and younger are known to be a higher risk. Despite that, in the past, Zipcar has limited young driver prices to Zipcars booked off campus.
Why the change? In addition to rising costs, there has been a trend of more damage involving younger drivers, leading to an uptick in out-of-service cars. Adding the fee to on-campus reservations will allow more Zipcars to remain in active service so all students, faculty, and staff continue to have access to safe and well-maintained cars.
Zipcar is committed to remaining affordable for the UMB community. Today, the young driver fee for cars booked on campus will be 50 percent lower per reservation than for off-campus cars. And as usual, gas, secondary insurance, and maintenance are always covered.
