BLACK MEN & MENTAL HEALTH

Join us on Instagram (@mdsocialwork) for a Live IG Conversation about "Black Men and Mental Health" on Thursday, March 21, at 5 p.m.

Listen to a panel of Black men talk openly about environmental factors that impact their mental health and overall well-being. Social disparities such as lack of education and employment opportunities, socioeconomic status, systemic racism, and housing instability contribute to the violence and generational trauma impacting the lives of Black men. These various factors foster a sense of anger, isolation, and resentment — causing higher rates of mental health issues that go unnoticed due to the stigma around seeking and receiving help.

Objectives

  • Identify how Black men’s mental health is challenged by stigma and racism.
  • Discuss the most critical intervention points for Black men’s mental health.
  • Describe successful treatment types for Black men, both traditional and innovative.
  • How can we attract more Black men to pursue a career in social work and mental health services?
  • What are effective ways to promote Black men’s mental health in Baltimore City and beyond?

Speakers

  • Tyrone Roper, director, Family Support Center
  • Nikomar Mosley, associate director, Positive Schools Center, Promise Heights School-Based Programs
  • Andre Turner, senior program trainer/coach, Positive Schools Center
