What is the Newcomer Support Team?

The Newcomer Support Team is an initiative of Baltimore City Public Schools to assess the needs and develop school and community support services for immigrant students, their families, and schools. Consisting of three full-time social workers and between four to eight interns, the Newcomer Support Team provides crucial mental health supports and social-emotional learning opportunities to immigrant and refugee students in city schools.

What does a Clinical Internship with the Newcomer Support Team look like?

We are in our ninth year of providing incredible learning opportunities for University of Maryland School of Social Work interns. As a Newcomer Support Team Advanced Clinical intern, you can expect to do one or more of the following:

  • Provide direct services to students and families, including both short-term assessments and long-term counseling and case management
  • Develop and implement an empowerment-focused group with students
  • Collaborate with fellow interns and school staff at a one of our schools (we have three main sites located in the center, southeast, and southwest areas of Baltimore City)
  • Learn a variety of clinical skills, including CBT methods, trauma-informed practices, empowerment approaches, crisis intervention, and more
  • Receive excellent supervision from one of the team’s three full-time social workers

What does a Macro Internship with the Newcomer Support Team look like?

We are in our ninth year of providing incredible learning opportunities for University of Maryland School of Social Work interns. As a Newcomer Support Team Advanced Macro intern, you can expect to do one or more of the following:

  • Develop and implement a schoolwide needs assessment and resource map
  • Spearhead parent engagement and organizing initiatives to enhance caregiver access to school and community resources
  • Facilitate an empowerment-focused group with students (one possible project includes supporting a mentoring program with at-risk Latinx students)
  • Collaborate with fellow interns, school staff, and community resource providers at a one of our schools (we have three main sites located in the center, southeast, and southwest areas of Baltimore City)
  • Provide direct services to a limited number of students and families, including both short-term assessments and long-term case management
  • Learn a variety of macro skills, including community organizing, systems analysis, advocacy, coalition-building, group facilitation, and more
  • Receive excellent supervision from one of the team’s three full-time social workers

Who is eligible?

We are looking for clinical and macro students with a commitment to working with immigrant and refugee youth in Baltimore City. Proficiency in a second language is a plus, but it is not necessarily required.
