February 07, 2024The Dean’s Research Scholars Program is designed to bolster UMSON's research mission and nurture nursing leaders who are dedicated to advancing the profession through cutting-edge science and research. This program offers a two-year opportunity with protected time, financial support, and other resources to successful applicants, allowing scholars to focus on securing extramural support for their research programs.
Program highlights:
- Reduced teaching load during the appointment period (maximum of 2.5 workload units per academic year).
- A one-time $12,000 research-related grant to support Institutional Review Board or Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee-approved research activities.
- Mentorship with a faculty member to establish and achieve research goals.
- A research allowance of up to $500 per year for two years for mentors.
- Limited committee participation and a reduced number of academic advisees.

- Eligibility: Ideal candidates should be early- or mid-career, full-time faculty members with an earned doctoral degree.

- Agreement signed by the faculty member, department chair, director of an organized research center, and associate dean for research and the abstract.
- Proposal Narrative (limited to no more than five pages, 12 pt. font, single-spaced) should include the following:
- Specific aims
- Statement of future fundability

- Summary of potential funding sources for program of research
- Potential grants for submission
- Alignment of research Interest with funding priorities of an extramural research funding organization
- Project description
- Outline of applicant’s professional development plan
- Anticipated schedule
- Deliverables for years 1 and 2
- Appendices:
- Reference list for proposal narrative
- Mentoring plan (two years), including a statement of how the plan relates to the professional development plan for enhancing the DRS candidate’s likelihood of success at submitting an R-level or equivalent extramural grant; must be signed by the mentor, candidate, candidate’s department chair, and the associate dean for research.
