4 Snapshots of Child Welfare Fellows and 1 Snapshot of the faculty presenter facilitating a conversation on the SHARP Framework

We are thrilled to share the success of our Child Welfare Fellowship Kick-Off event, held Aug. 27 and 29. This year, we welcomed both new and returning students to the fellowship, and the energy and enthusiasm they brought to the event were truly inspiring.

The event featured a dynamic introduction to the public child welfare system, with a special guest appearance by the deputy director of the Baltimore City Department of Social Services, Denise Conway, who shared valuable insights into the field. Fellows were also introduced to critically analyzing the system using the SHARP Framework, fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities of public child welfare.

Through a fun and engaging scavenger hunt, fellows had the opportunity to build connections and strengthen their bonds as a cohort. The event also featured additional community partners who facilitated meaningful conversations around authentic partnerships with families, including fatherhood expert/speaker/trainer with Fathers Forward, Eugene Schneeberg, and Maryland Social Services Administration resource parent ombuds Becky Rice.

Breakout sessions were a highlight, focusing on clinical skill development. Fellows explored innovative practices for working with families and youth, with a particular emphasis on engagement and play-based therapy — essential tools for enhancing their work in the field.

We are so proud of the passion and commitment our students have shown from the very start, and we look forward to all the incredible work they will continue to do as they grow together in this journey!

Here's to a fantastic start to the 2024 Child Welfare Fellowship!
