The University of Maryland School of Social Work’s First-Generation Student Success Program, in collaboration with the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Intercultural Center, is excited to start this year with a celebration with and for all of our first-generation college students at UMB on Monday, Jan. 29, from 12-2 p.m. in the Fireside Lounge of the SMC Campus Center.

First-generation students are often defined as those whose parents did not complete an undergraduate degree. First-generation graduate students are former first-generation college students who have progressed to an advanced degree. Our definition is fluid, and we encourage anyone who considers themselves to be first-generation to join us.

We hope that you will consider joining us for lunch, informal fun activities, and community building. The first 75 attendees will receive a First-Gen UMB T-shirt. First-gen students, faculty, staff, and allies are welcome!

Register here.

The Intercultural Center and the School of Social Work have been committed to creating greater visibility and understanding of being first-generation as an aspect of social identity; this is our second year of collaboration between our offices to create an institutionalized presence. If you are interested in learning more about First-Gen initiatives at UMB, please contact your student affairs dean or the Intercultural Center.
