DC Residents

The University of Maryland School of Social Work (UMSSW) is now offering in-state tuition rates to residents of Washington, D.C., enrolled in our Master of Social Work (MSW) program. This initiative is part of our commitment to addressing the regional shortage of social workers.

Effective this fall, D.C. residents can benefit from in-state tuition whether they participate in our online program or attend classes at our Baltimore or Shady Grove locations. This decision follows observations that many prospective students from D.C. began the application process but did not complete it, or chose not to enroll after acceptance.

We believe this change will make our MSW program more accessible to D.C. residents and support the development of skilled social work professionals in the region.

“D.C., like the state of Maryland, like the surrounding area, is experiencing a major shortage of social workers,” said Amanda Lehning, MSW, PhD, senior associate dean for academic affairs and associate professor at UMSSW. “So there’s a need in D.C. for more social workers, and we think there’s a lot more people that would want to become social workers, because there’s all these different things you can do with that degree.”
