About 6.5 million people in the United States have an Intellectual Disability (ID) and yet health care providers most often receive inadequate training to provide inclusive, affirming health services for this group who have historically faced stigma within medical and social services organizations. Additionally, due to a variety of social and environmental factors, people with ID face significant health disparities and are at greater risk for multiple health complications including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and shortened life expectancy. Many of these disparities can be addressed through better, more inclusive health care services.

The University of Maryland School of Nursing, School of Social Work, and School of Medicine are partnering with advocates from Special Olympics Maryland (SOMD) to offer students additional training and practice opportunities to support inclusive health care with people who have ID. Students who volunteer for this event will come together for an afternoon to learn skills for inclusive health assessment from our partners at Special Olympics International and University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) faculty. You will also meet advocates with ID from SOMD, learn more about their health stories, and receive advice on strategies for health advocacy, including information about the health disparities that currently exist and how you can be part of working to change this landscape. Each student will engage in an interprofessional simulation with a standardized patient who has ID and have the opportunity for debrief, questions, and feedback to enhance your learning.

When: Friday, April 26, from 12:30-4:30 p.m.

Where: Standardized Patient Program located in the University of Maryland School of Nursing | 655 W. Lombard St., Room W213, Baltimore, MD 21201
