You may have noticed some caged trees around campus lately. In June, UMB partnered with Howard EcoWorks to add 14 native trees to campus. Sites where trees were planted include:

  • Health Sciences Research Facility II
  • Health Sciences Research Facility III
  • Koester’s Lot
  • Recycling Center
  • Pascault Row

Native trees like the American hornbeam, common serviceberry, eastern redbud, and sweetbay magnolia planted don’t just provide shade and manage stormwater. They also are lower maintenance, provide food and shelter to local wildlife, and support and preserve biodiversity.

UMB is working on increasing its tree canopy to combat urban heat island effect by planting more trees on campus, with a goal of planting native when possible. To learn more about UMB’s trees on campus, visit the Office of Sustainability's Campus Tree Page and don’t forget to check out the UMB Campus Tree Inventory Dashboard.

Howard EcoWorks has several partnership opportunities for interested communities, organizations, and individuals. Some are specific to Howard County and others are within the surrounding area.
