Oct. 7: ‘The Fight Over Pharmacy Benefit Managers’
September 30, 2024Welcome to the Health Law Brown Bag event with professor Bill Sarraille, JD. Join us for an informal discussion at noon Oct. 7 on current health law topics during this in-person event at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, Room 205.
Sarraille will be talking about "The Fight Over Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs)." A pitch battle is being fought between supporters and critics of PBMs. With three large PBMs administering almost 90 percent of all drug claims in the United States, supporters claim that PBMs save billions for the federal government, payers, employers, and consumers, but critics, including the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), charge that PBMs have driven increases in drug prices that have raised costs, including cost sharing from consumers. Sarraille will discuss a recently issued "interim report" from the FTC, a lawsuit by PBM Express Scripts seeking to strike that report, and the FTC's recent filing of an administrative complaint against all three of the major PBMs.
