Rash

Many people think they are allergic to penicillin. In fact, there is a 95 percent chance that you do not have a true allergy. The University of Maryland Medical Center’s Allergy Clinic offers testing to determine if you definitively have an immune-mediated response to penicillin drugs.

Why get tested? If you are not allergic to penicillin, health care professionals can use this antibiotic to treat a potentially life-threatening  infection in the future.

Reasons why you may think you have a penicillin allergy:

  • You had a rash that was not due to the antibiotic. For example, it may have been due to your illness.
  • Reactions such as a stomachache or loose bowels are not a true allergy.
  • Also many people outgrow allergies.
