Cigarette butts in mulch with a red

UMB’s Office of the Fire Marshal is reporting a significant increase in mulch fires at UMB. High temperatures and dry conditions create hazardous conditions for these fires, which are often caused by improperly discarded cigarette butts.

Help do your part to keep UMB safe and beautiful:

  • Only smoke in designated smoking areas
  • Fully extinguish cigarettes before discarding them.
  • Always throw cigarette butts in a proper receptacle — never on the ground or in trash cans.
  • Use your best judgment if you see smoke or fire. Depending on the severity, you may be able to stomp out the cigarette butt yourself. If you see flames, call 911.
