Please join UMB’s Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) in welcoming guest speaker Alan Shuldiner, MD, for the ICTR Enrichment Series Seminar at noon June 4.
Shuldiner is the John L. Whitehurst Endowed Professor of Medicine (part-time) and director of the Program for Personalized and Genomic Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He also serves as vice president at the Regeneron Genetics Center.
A leading national expert and researcher in precision medicine, Shuldiner focuses on the genetics of age-related diseases, including type 2 diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and pharmacogenomics of these disorders — from the discovery of underlying mechanisms of disease to implementation into patient care. He is best known for his studies involving Old Order Amish, a homogeneous population ideal for genetic studies. He has authored more than 400 original articles in leading journals and 70 reviews and book chapters. Most recently, Shuldiner has led a multidisciplinary group to implement ICTR’s "My Healthy Maryland" Precision Medicine Research program, an ambitious effort to engage up to 250,000 participants throughout the state of Maryland for a broad range of health-related research from molecules to municipalities.
In this presentation, Shuldiner will introduce Precision Medicine as a medical model that takes into account a patient’s genes, clinical and biomarker information, environment, and lifestyle to individualize medical decisions, treatments, and practices. The ICTR-led "My Healthy Maryland" Precision Medicine Research program is an unprecedented initiative to advance Precision Medicine in our state. We will engage up to 250,000 research participants inclusive of the diversity of our state, integrating clinical phenomics, genomic, and other omic science with informatics and big data analytics for a broad range of research and to improve the health of Marylanders and the value of health care in a dynamic learning health care system environment.
This ICTR lecture will review the current state and promises of Precision Medicine, describe the "My Healthy Maryland" program, and how you can help as health care professionals and citizens of our state to achieve our goals.
