Please join UMB’s Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) in welcoming guest speaker Bradley Maron, MD, FAHA, for February’s ICTR Enrichment Series Seminar at noon Feb. 13.

Maron is the senior associate dean for precision medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and co-director of the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing (UM-IHC). His research spans computational sciences including network medicine and other approaches for reducing big data into the most salient and useful elements. His laboratory studies redox biochemistry to identify functional essentially protein cysteinyl thiols, which has resulted in the discovery of several therapeutic targets for the treatment of cardiopulmonary diseases. In collaborative work, he led international projects focusing on the hemodynamic spectrum of clinical risk, which has contributed to revised definition of pulmonary hypertension that is used in clinical practice. Maron has co-authored approximately 200 scientific manuscripts, is the co-inventor of several patents or pending patents, and is funded by the National Institutes of Health and many other foundations. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and a recipient of numerous prestigious awards for research, clinical skills, and teaching. 

In this presentation, “The University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing," Maron will introduce the overarching goals of the UM-IHC, which are to leverage next-generation analytics (i.e. artificial intelligence, network medicine, others) to decrease disease burden and improve wellness among all Maryland citizens by focusing on health equity and, in doing so, stimulate public-private partnerships in the life sciences sector. The UM-IHC seeks to transform the health care paradigm by using data science to build a proactive system defined by early disease detection, greater opportunity for patient engagement in health care, and deployment of treatment interventions that is efficient and effective. This approach aims to address existential problems that plague current health care systems, which are costly, inefficient, and often biased. This presentation will provide an overview of the UM-IHC goals and some early evidence of progress.
