AACN Progression Indicators Released
October 02, 2025Progression Indicators Now Available in the Essentials Tool Kit
AACN is excited to announce the release of the progression indicators (PIs) to support the alignment of assessment strategies with the Essentials and competency-based education (CBE).
PIs, or behavioral performance indicators, are descriptive, observable behaviors that demonstrate a learner's growth toward attainment of each of the subcompetencies in the Essentials. The subcompetencies, as they were originally published in 2021, delineate the behaviors students can be expected to exhibit in entry- and advanced-level programs (Level 1 and Level 2, respectively), but are not all clearly defined.
To strengthen assessment and clarify expectations, the PIs were developed to be used as action-oriented markers that guide competency development across a program. View the Progression Indicators here!
