Accessibility Features on UMB’s Redesigned Website
May 28, 2025As part of the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) redesigned website, the University has added a set of accessibility features to support a more inclusive experience for all visitors.
You might have noticed an icon in the bottom right corner of the umaryland.edu homepage. This icon opens a window that allows the user to take a variety of steps to make the website more accessible. For example, you can enlarge the type, make the fonts readable, hide images, or stop animations.
No setup is needed. These features are instantly available on every page of the umaryland.edu website. Just click the accessibility icon and make the adjustments that feel right for you.
Accessibility is the inclusive practice of ensuring that people of all abilities are given equal access to information and functionality. UMB thinks that everyone deserves equal access to online content — regardless of ability. Whether you’re navigating with assistive technology or simply prefer a more tailored interface, these tools help you interact with the University’s content in a way that works best for you.
Accessibility benefits everyone — not just people with diagnosed disabilities. Visitors who are experiencing eye strain, recovering from an injury, or simply prefer a more focused layout will find that these tools make your experience more comfortable and accessible.
Here are the features visitors will find when they click on the accessibility icon:
Make Text Easier to Read
- Increase text size and spacing for improved readability
- Switch to fonts designed for clarity and ease of reading, including options that support dyslexia
- Use a reading guide that follows your cursor to help stay focused on one line at a time
Adjust Visual Contrast and Color Settings
- Invert colors to reduce visual strain or support light sensitivity
- Adjust brightness, contrast, and saturation for more comfortable viewing
- Apply grayscale for a simplified, low-stimulation experience
- Use color filters to support different types of color blindness, including red/green, blue/yellow, and green/red variations
Reduce Visual Distractions
- Remove images from the page to create a cleaner, less distracting layout
- Stop moving elements or transitions to support visitors who are sensitive to motion
Navigate More Easily
- Enlarge the mouse pointer for easier tracking
- Highlight links and buttons so they are easier to identify
- Turn on tooltips for better context and guidance as you browse
Listen Instead of Read
- Have on-screen text read aloud to support users with visual impairments, reading difficulties, or anyone who prefers audio
We’re committed to creating a space that welcomes everyone. Try out the accessibility features and adjust your browsing experience whichever way you like. If you have suggestions or feedback about your experience, you can contact UMB’s Web Design and Development Team by emailing us at communicationsweb@umaryland.edu or filling out the Web Feedback form.
