Faculty Programs at the UMB Writing Center
September 24, 2025At the UMB Writing Center, our faculty programming is built around three core supports to help you integrate writing more strategically into your courses.
First, we offer a syllabus blurb that faculty can easily plug into their course materials or online platforms, letting students know from day one about the Writing Center’s resources and the importance of writing support.
Second, our signature workshop series “Aus dem Nähkästchen plaudern: Conversations on Teaching (with) Writing at UMB” brings together colleagues each semester for dialogue with and hands-on application of writing pedagogy, assessment, and integrating writing into disciplinary teaching.
Third, we offer individual consultations for faculty, instructors, postdocs, and doctoral students around all aspects of writing instruction, such as developing assignments, designing feedback strategies, aligning assessments, and thinking through pedagogical challenges (including those posed by changing technologies such as AI tools).
Whether you teach in a writing-intensive course or routinely assign writing in your field, these services are intended to support and strengthen your efforts — not to start from scratch. The Writing Center is your partner in nurturing student writers, refining your approach, and building a sustainable writing culture at UMB.
Visit our Faculty Information website for more details and directions on how to sign up for our programs. And come back in mid-October for an updated list of faculty workshops about writing pedagogy and assessment that we can tailor to your department's or program’s needs.
For accommodations, contact writingcenter@umaryland.edu before any of the events.
