Tips for Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) and Data Use Agreements (DUAs)

If you are receiving or sending specimens or data, you will need an MTA (for specimens) or a DUA (for data).

  • Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs)
    • A contract that governs the transfer of tangible research materials between two organizations — from the owner or authorized licensee to another organization — for research or evaluative purposes.
    • Please be sure to follow all regulations related to shipping biological materials.
  • Data Use Agreements (DUAs)
    • A contract that outlines the terms and conditions for transferring and using nonpublic or restricted-use data, such as Protected Health Information (PHI), to prevent misuse, protect confidentiality, and ensure compliance with laws like HIPAA.
  • Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Protocols
    • Do not forget to submit a protocol (IRB for human specimens and data or IACUC for animal specimens) if you will be using the data or specimens in your research at UMB.
