A group of colleagues from across the University System of Maryland (USM), including a staff member and student from the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), are coming together to organize The Dialogue Symposium: Bringing Campus and Communities Together. The event will take place on Thursday, Jan. 29, in the University Center Ballroom at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Inspired by the work of the Difficult Dialogues National Resource Center, this year’s theme, “Dialogue as a Campus and Community Approach,” spotlights how institutions can weave dialogic practices into classrooms, co-curricular programs, administrative spaces, and community-engaged initiatives.

Throughout the day, attendees will take part in interactive sessions and hands-on learning designed to deepen skills and spark new partnerships. Participants will have opportunities to:

  • Build strategies for institutional leadership and resource alignment to sustain dialogue-based programs.

  • Strengthen facilitation and practitioner skills with an emphasis on trauma-informed approaches and facilitator well-being.

  • Explore tools for integrating dialogue into curricula, pedagogy, and departmental initiatives.

  • Join an “Unconference” session, co-creating ideas and learning alongside colleagues across the system.

  • Help shape new directions for dialogue work across USM and the broader region.

Whether supporting a campuswide initiative, teaching with dialogue, or facilitating conversations in student- or community-facing roles, attendees will leave with practical techniques and fresh inspiration for building dialogue-rich learning environments.

Registration is open, with the following categories available:

  • General Attendance: $25

  • Students (Undergraduate/Graduate): Free

The Dialogue Symposium offers a space to connect, reflect, and chart a shared vision for dialogue-centered campus and community life. All are invited to take part in this day of learning and collaboration.
